HIM Coders are responsible for coding a variety of services including: Ambulatory Surgery, professional fee services for hospital visits and procedures for all specialty services, clinic visits and procedures (including Urgent Care), Pathology and EKG’s, with assignment of ICD-10 diagnostic codes. Coders read and interpret medical record documentation to identify codeable diagnoses, services and supplies, and assign codes as appropriate. They follow industry-standard coding and payor guidelines and KP policy and procedures in the application of coding methodologies and medical record interpretation. Coding is critical for billing and reimbursement of services provided by Kaiser Permanente providers and staff. Coded data is also used in practice management and in managing patient populations. Coding is required to submit compliant bills, and for reporting Medicare encounter data.
Intermediate Knowledge of ICD, CPT and E&M coding and HCPCS coding, including application of official coding guidelines for hospital, ambulatory surgery and clinic settings. Knowledge of medical billing and compliance requirements. Customer service, communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Computer skill in MS Windows environment, including Excel and 10-key.
< 1 Year ICD, CPT and HCPCS professional coding experience in a hospital, ambulatory surgery or clinic setting.
At time of hire Any one of the following: RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCS-P
Advanced Working knowledge of electronic medical record systems and encoder applications.
2 years professional services coding experience of 2 years or more, including multiple specialties and surgical procedures. Experience with the Epic medical record and billing systems.
At time of hire More than one coding certification
Minimum Education Requirements
Vocational School/Certificate Program – Medical terminology, medical science and disease processes, anatomy and physiology, ICD, CPT and HCPCS coding and coding guidelines.
Associates Degree – Health Information Technology degree from CAHIM-accredited program.
